Johnston Real Estate Information

A small but growing community in Polk County, Johnston, Iowa, is a suburban community that lies about 15 miles northwest of Des Moines. It is home to a population of just over 15,000 residents, as of a 2007 estimate, a figure that has grown quite a bit since the 2000 census, when the city's population was pegged at around 8,500. The city is a part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city makes up an area of fifteen and a half square miles, and its residents are slightly more well off than the average Iowan citizen, with an annual median household income of more than $76,000.

Johnston was first settled in 1905 when it was a station stop on the railroad that traveled between Des Moines and Perry, but it did not officially incorporate as a city until September 18, 1969. It was named after the railway's freight supervisor, John F. Johnston. Today the economy has evolved from a railroad industrial town to a more suburban retail and office area. Headquarters of companies and corporations like Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds, Iowa Public Television and The Gardeners of America/Men's Garden Clubs of America are located here. The Camp Dodge Military Reservation is also located in town.

Johnston is bordered on the east by the Des Moines River and bisected by Beaver Creek. To the east of the city is part of Saylorville Reservoir, a popular destination for residents of all ages to enjoy the water and the sun in the summer months. The city has about a dozen parks, including Adventure Ridge Park, the Beaver Creek Natural Resources Area, the Crown Point Community Center, Dewey Park and Morningside Park. One golf area, Beaver Creek Golf Course, provides a place to play a round in the warmer months.

Children in town attend schools in the Johnston Community School District, which is made up of five elementary schools, two middle schools, one senior high school, and one shared alternative school. The Johnston Public Library offers a wealth of resources for area residents to peruse.
